Kintetsu Express announced on August 13 that it had signed a new agreement with Shell Aviation, the aviation fuel division of Shell, regarding the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The two companies jointly participated in the "Pilot Program on Transferring and Utilizing Environmental Value Using Market Mechanisms" implemented by Smart Freight Centre in 2023.
Since then, discussions have been held to establish a safe and convenient SAF environmental value trading mechanism for all stakeholders, including shippers who utilize air cargo transport.
Under this agreement, Kintetsu Express will introduce Shell Aviation's digital platform "Avelia" to quickly respond to the low-carbon transportation needs of its clients.
Avelia enables centralized management of environmental value, from ordering and receiving SAF to inventory management and issuance of reduction certificates, regardless of its physical use. By utilizing blockchain technology, it can allocate the environmental value of SAF to freight forwarders, airlines, and shippers in a reliable manner.
The system is expected to ensure the effectiveness of emissions reductions, avoid incorrect double counting of reductions, and ensure transparency and accountability.
