Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) announced on August 25th plans to expand and enhance the gateway facilities at Narita International Airport.
The new gateway will be approximately twice the size of the existing one, covering about 8500 square meters. It will consist of two buildings and is scheduled to begin operation in stages from the latter half of 2026 to 2027.
The facilities in the first cargo building will be equipped with a more advanced sorting system for sorting parcels and other items related to cross-border e-commerce. Meanwhile, the facilities in the third cargo building will be renovated to be exclusively for large and heavy cargo, providing space to streamline the handling of import and export cargo, preparation for loading onto aircraft, and loading and unloading operations onto trucks.
Kei Kubota, Managing Director and Japan Representative of FedEx, commented on the facility expansion, saying, "Improving operational efficiency at our important gateway facilities is essential to meeting diverse transportation needs and volumes. This plan is part of FedEx's global business strategy and aims to strengthen our capacity to transport large and heavy cargo and build a transportation network for the future."
Furthermore, FedEx's cargo volume at Narita International Airport continues to increase steadily, projected to be 4.5% higher in 2024 compared to the previous year and approximately 25% higher than in 2019.
