On September 18, Nippon Yusen announced the completion of a demonstration project for the long-term use and storage of the biofuel "B24," which was conducted jointly with the Singapore-based non-profit organization "Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)," which promotes the decarbonization of the maritime industry.
The study involved continuously using biofuel on a car carrier for six months and thoroughly examining its impact on engine performance and the fuel supply system. The results showed no technical problems, and the fuel maintained ISO-standard quality even after being stored on board, thus confirming the safe and sustainable use of biofuel.
There were no signs of wear or corrosion on the equipment, the lubricants and filters maintained their normal performance, and the fuel quality after storage was within ISO 8217 standards, with no occurrence of microbial contamination.
These results demonstrate that biofuels can be safely and immediately introduced as "drop-in fuels" that can utilize existing ship infrastructure, providing technical support for their future expansion.
Furthermore, biofuels are a promising option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and will be key to accelerating the decarbonization of the entire maritime industry.
The project's verification results will be published on the GCMD website as technical information that can be used by businesses that have not yet adopted biofuels.
