On October 2nd, Nippon Yusen announced that NYK Stolt Tankers, a joint venture between Nippon Yusen and Norwegian chemical tanker giant Stolt Tankers, had signed a contract with Nantong Xiangyu Shipyard in China to build two parcel chemical tankers.

The two vessels ordered are large chemical tankers capable of carrying 38,000 tons of cargo. They feature stainless steel cargo holds and are designed to handle the transport of a wide variety of chemical products.

As an environmental measure, it is equipped with energy-saving technologies and also has facilities to receive necessary power from land-based equipment while docked in port.

The two vessels are scheduled for completion in 2028 and 2029 and will be deployed in the chemical tanker pool operated by a subsidiary of Stolt Tankers. Together with the six vessels ordered from the shipyard in 2024, a total of eight chemical tankers will be built.

As demand for renewable energy increases in order to realize a decarbonized society, chemical tankers capable of transporting renewable fuels, including SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), and their raw materials are expected to see continued growth in demand.

Nippon Yusen Group, together with Stolt Tankers, is proceeding with the modernization and expansion of its chemical tanker fleet, replacing older vessels with more fuel-efficient ones to meet the growing demand for chemical product transportation.
