Japan Airlines (JAL) and East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced that they will conduct a joint overseas transportation trial between their respective groups starting October 7th.
In this first-of-its-kind trial, JR East's train transport service "Hakobyun" will be combined with JAL's international air cargo transport to shorten the transport time, which typically exceeds 24 hours, to just 19 hours, delivering local products from Sendai to Singapore.
The aim is to achieve fast and seamless transportation by coordinating customs procedures between the two companies and providing a one-stop service.
This time, pears harvested at "JR Fruit Park Sendai Arahama," operated by JR East Group's Sendai Terminal Building, will be transported to Singapore, where the company will promote and sell them at the local event "THE JAPAN RAIL FAIR 2025."
Utilizing the Shinkansen for transportation from regional areas not only shortens travel times but also aims to expand the options for new transportation methods as a means of modal shift, such as alleviating the labor shortage of truck drivers and reducing CO2 emissions.
This trial will serve as a catalyst for JR East Group and JAL Group to collaborate and explore expanding overseas exports of local products from various regions of Japan.
