Toyota Tsusho and Toa Construction Co., Ltd. announced that their comprehensive development projects in the Namibe Bay of the Republic of Angola, namely the "Sacomar Port Iron Ore Export Terminal Restoration Project" and the "Namibe Port Container Terminal Expansion Project," were completed on October 10th.

Since gaining independence in 1975, the Republic of Angola's port infrastructure has been severely damaged and deteriorated due to the long-term civil war, hindering economic development in the southern region. In particular, the ports of Sacoma and Namibe play a crucial role in the export of mineral resources and the distribution of essential goods, making modernization and restoration of their functions an urgent necessity.
The project consists of two parts: the "restoration of the Sakomar Port iron ore export terminal" and the "expansion of the Namibe Port container terminal," both located within Namibe Bay.
As part of the Angolan government's port reconstruction plan, a consortium of Toyota Tsusho and Toa Construction Co., Ltd. signed a contract with the Angolan Ministry of Transport on January 11, 2019, and construction began in September 2022.
The Sacomar Port restoration project, involving the construction of a new pier for loading iron ore and the development of the port's hinterland, is expected to resume exports of iron ore mined at the Casinga mine in southern Angola, diversifying Angola's industries, which have been heavily reliant on crude oil exports.
Furthermore, the expansion of the Namibe Port container terminal will allow large container ships to enter the port, which is expected to lead to a significant increase in cargo handling volume.
