On October 17, Kawasaki Kisen conducted a fire extinguishing experiment at the fire extinguishing test facility of its Kashiwa Tech Technical Center in Bando City, Ibaraki Prefecture, by burning a scrapped vehicle (gasoline-powered).
This exercise simulates a fire breaking out in the hold of a car carrier, aiming to confirm methods for extinguishing vehicle fires and establish new firefighting tactics.
Twenty-five people participated in the experiment, conducting firefighting using not only the existing fire extinguishing nozzles used on the vessel, but also a new type of fire extinguishing nozzle with superior water discharge performance. With the cooperation of the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center, a demonstration was also given of a firefighting method using a specially shaped nozzle that can cool the burning inside a vehicle with water.
According to Kawasaki Kisen, this was the first time they had conducted a firefighting experiment involving an actual burning vehicle. "It was a valuable opportunity to experience firsthand the speed at which a vehicle fire progresses and effective firefighting tactics. In the future, we would like to consider conducting further tests to strengthen our ability to respond to various types of vehicle fires, including those involving electric vehicles."
