Nakano Shoji, a member of the Yamato Holdings Group, announced on December 17 that it had used "Susteo," a next-generation biodiesel fuel blended with 51% HVO, as fuel for a 10-ton truck.
HVO is a synthetic fuel whose physical properties have been improved, such as becoming more stable against oxidation, by reacting vegetable oil or waste cooking oil with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure (hydrogenation treatment).
Euglena's "Susteo" was used as fuel for two 10-ton trucks operated by Nakano Shokai, running between the Kansai and Kanto regions, for approximately two months from October to November.
Fuel supply was provided by Kamei, a sales partner of "Susteo" headquartered in Sendai City, and refueling of the vehicles was carried out by Ishimori Oil in Hachioji City, Tokyo.
To achieve long-distance transport of heavy loads, the use of liquid fuels that allow for quick and efficient refueling is essential. By using "Susteo," the carrier (cargo bed) capacity can be maximized because, compared to EVs, additional equipment such as batteries is not required.
The "Susteo" system used in this project requires no modifications to the original vehicle's equipment and allows for regular "top-up refueling" at existing refueling facilities, making it an important solution for decarbonizing 10-ton trucks.
