Nippon Yusen announced on December 22 that its group company, NYK Bulkship (Asia), had signed a basic terms agreement with JERA for a time charter contract for two ammonia carriers.
Low-carbon ammonia produced at JERA's Blue Point project in Louisiana, USA, will be transported to JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Plant (Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture).
In addition to its use in fertilizers and chemicals, ammonia is expected to have diverse applications as a next-generation clean energy source that does not emit CO2 when burned, such as in marine fuel.
Nippon Yusen Group and JERA had been jointly considering the safe transportation of fuel ammonia to the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant using large vessels. This agreement will allow them to fully advance commercialization efforts and support a stable supply of low-carbon ammonia. This plan is expected to be the first commercial transportation of fuel ammonia to Japan.
