On July 3, Sagawa Printing announced the installation of a large-scale material handling system, consisting of large-scale automated sorting machines and automated measuring devices, at the new Tokyo sales office (Koto-ku, Tokyo) of World Supply , a core logistics company of the SG Holdings Group. Sagawa Printing plans to accelerate the order and installation of large-scale material handling systems as a DX solution for corporate logistics, which is facing significant labor shortages and increasing volume of goods.
The material handling system installed this time has a conveyor line that is approximately 100 meters wide and has a processing capacity of 2500 cases per hour.
In addition to being the largest facility ever installed by Sagawa Printing, it is equipped with a proprietary "BCR (barcode reader) measuring device" that can automatically measure and weigh packages on the conveyor belt in the final stage after the shipping labels have been attached, and automatically calculate shipping costs.
To ensure ample workspace and smooth workflow, the conveyors are suspended rather than installed on the floor, and their use in conjunction with the BCR system will facilitate future data utilization.
World Supply handles the sorting and shipping of manufacturer products to large retailers such as department stores, and the installation of large-scale material handling equipment is expected to reduce working hours by approximately 30,500 hours per year.
Sagawa Printing has been installing small and medium-sized material handling equipment, leveraging the knowledge it has cultivated in the logistics operations of companies under the SGHD Group.
In logistics, where efficiency and labor reduction are paramount, material handling has become an important solution. However, major material handling companies are reportedly struggling to keep up with the workload and are facing large backlogs of orders.
The domestic material handling market, which has expanded to 2.26 trillion yen, is expected to grow even further, and Sagawa Printing says it will play a part in market growth with its unique technology that leverages its on-site experience.
