SBS Toshiba Logistics announced on October 1st that the use of its self-developed "VR Forklift Safety Training" system is expanding.
Initially developed as an internal safety training tool, it is now being used both internally and externally as a means to address the shortage of qualified forklift operators and training personnel in logistics operations.
This safety education system aims to reduce forklift accidents.
Recognizing challenges such as "it's difficult to convey the dangers of accidents through classroom lectures alone" and "it's difficult to secure time and space for training using actual equipment," they developed a program that allows participants to simulate accidents while operating forklifts themselves. More than 1500 people, mainly from SBS Group companies, have taken the course.
Meanwhile, the company has also gained positive feedback through VR demonstrations for customers outside of its operations. Amidst a shortage of personnel capable of training forklift operators on safety and operation, VR training is proving effective as an efficient method that doesn't burden the workplace, as it can be conducted in limited spaces and allows even those without forklift licenses to act as instructors.
For example, its use has expanded to include accident prevention training for inexperienced workers, training for new employees to promote qualification acquisition, and facilitating understanding of the job for those with no prior forklift experience.
Participants have commented that they "realized their preconceived notions due to familiarity" and "reaffirmed the importance of pointing and calling out, as well as verbal communication." SBS Toshiba Logistics plans to expand both its VR safety education seminars, which are conducted at customer sites, and its sales of VR systems that can be used continuously.
