On October 2nd, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced that MOL Ocean Bulk, which handles the group's overseas Capesize operations, had signed a 25-year long-term iron ore transport contract with Vale International for two ore carriers.
To move towards decarbonization, this project will utilize the world's first "three-fuel" 210,000 deadweight ton ore carrier, capable of switching between three types of fuel: ethanol, methanol, and heavy oil.
The vessel is scheduled for completion in 2030 and will primarily be engaged in the maritime transport of iron ore after its completion.
It features an "LNG/Ammonia Ready" specification that allows for the future use of LNG or ammonia as fuel, and incorporates various energy-saving technologies that can be adopted at the time of new construction.
By ensuring flexibility in fuel selection based on fuel supply conditions, decarbonization effects, and economic feasibility, the effectiveness of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in maritime transport will be enhanced.
